AI Will Not Replace the Electrician — But an Electrician Using AI Might
The future of skilled trades in an increasingly automated world
Artificial intelligence is no longer something that belongs only to technology companies, programmers or science-fiction films.
It is already being used to write emails, prepare quotations, analyse information, answer customer questions, organise schedules, create reports and automate administrative processes.
This raises an important question for every working person:
What will happen to my occupation as AI becomes more capable?
For someone working as a bookkeeper, administrator or data capturer, the concern is understandable. Much of their work takes place on a computer and involves information that is already in a digital format.
But what about the electrician?

The answer is not simply yes or no.

These are important responsibilities, but many of them involve:

These are exactly the types of tasks that software and artificial intelligence can perform increasingly well.
The International Labour Organization has found that clerical occupations remain the most exposed to generative AI because many of their tasks can be performed or assisted digitally.
This does not mean that every bookkeeper will disappear.
It means that the occupation is changing. Routine capturing and reconciliation may become automated, while the human bookkeeper moves towards checking information, managing exceptions, advising clients, applying judgement and taking responsibility for financial controls.
Current employment projections illustrate this difference. In the United States, bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerk employment is projected to decline by 6% between 2024 and 2034, while employment for qualified accountants and auditors is projected to grow by 5%. These figures are not South African forecasts, but they demonstrate an important international trend: routine processing is under pressure, while higher-level judgement and responsibility remain valuable.
AI does not necessarily remove an entire occupation.
It often removes, reduces or transforms specific tasks within that occupation.
Why the electrician is different
Electrical work is not performed inside a perfect digital environment.
Every building is different. Every installation has a history. Drawings may be outdated. Previous alterations may not have been recorded. Conductors may be incorrectly identified. Equipment may be damaged, inaccessible or installed in a way that nobody expected.
An electrician must often work with incomplete information and changing physical conditions.

Research from the OECD indicates that occupations based on manual skills generally have lower exposure to AI than occupations centred on cognitive and clerical tasks.
International labour projections also continue to show demand for electricians. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects electrician employment to grow by 9% between 2024 and 2034, while the International Energy Agency has identified electricians among the skilled workers in particularly short supply as energy infrastructure expands. Again, these are international indicators rather than South African employment promises, but they confirm that electrical skills remain important in a changing economy.
The future needs more electricity, not less.
Solar PV, battery storage, electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, smart buildings, energy monitoring, automation, communication systems and modern industrial equipment all require competent people to install, test, maintain and repair them.
AI may help operate these systems, but electricians will still be needed to connect the physical world to the digital one.
Does this mean electricians are safe from change?
No.
The trade may be more difficult to automate completely, but that does not mean electricians can ignore artificial intelligence.
AI may not replace the person holding the tester, but it can already assist with many of the activities surrounding the physical work.

The second contractor can respond sooner, appear more professional and manage more work without immediately employing additional administrative staff.
That is why the greatest threat may not be AI replacing electricians.
The greatest threat may be an AI-assisted electrician outperforming an electrician who refuses to adapt.
How electricians can use AI to their advantage
1. Faster quotations
An electrician can provide the scope of work, labour requirements, material quantities and exclusions, and ask an AI tool to organise the information into a professional quotation.
AI should not be trusted to decide the technical scope or calculate prices without verification. Those decisions remain with the contractor.
However, it can improve the wording, structure and presentation of the quotation.
This helps contractors respond faster and reduces the chance of important conditions being left out.
2. Better customer communication
Electricians understand technical language, but customers often do not.
AI can help convert a technical explanation into a clear message for the customer.
For example, instead of simply saying that the earth-fault loop impedance is unacceptable, the electrician can prepare an explanation describing what was found, why it creates a risk and what work is required to correct it.
The electrician supplies the facts. AI helps communicate those facts clearly.
3. Turning site notes into professional reports
Site notes are often written quickly, recorded as voice notes or spread across several WhatsApp messages and photographs.

An AI answer can sound confident while still being wrong.

A small electrical contractor may not be able to employ a full-time marketer, administrator, copywriter and customer-care assistant.

The risks electricians must understand
AI is useful, but it is not automatically correct.
AI can give incorrect answers
An AI system may invent a regulation, use an outdated requirement, misunderstand the installation or confidently provide incorrect technical advice.
That makes blind reliance extremely dangerous.
AI cannot accept legal responsibility
AI cannot sign a Certificate of Compliance, register as a contractor, accept accountability for defective work or appear before an authority to defend its decision.
The responsibility remains with the electrician and, where applicable, the Registered Person.
Information may not be South African
Many AI systems draw from international information.
Wire colours, supply arrangements, terminology, certification procedures and legal requirements can differ between countries.
Advice that is correct elsewhere may not comply with South African requirements.
Client information must be protected
Contractors should be careful about uploading identity documents, addresses, electrical drawings, access details, account information or confidential customer records into public AI systems.
Overreliance can weaken practical knowledge
An electrician who asks AI for every answer without understanding the principles may become dependent on the tool.
AI should support competence—not create the appearance of competence where it does not exist.
AI cannot see the complete installation
A photograph shows only what is inside the frame.
It may not reveal loose connections, heat damage, conductor condition, test measurements, hidden joints, incorrect protection or alterations elsewhere in the installation.
A photograph may assist discussion, but it is not a complete electrical inspection.
A simple rule for responsible use
Electricians should treat AI in the same way they would treat an inexperienced assistant.
The assistant can help prepare documents, organise information, suggest questions and reduce repetitive work.
But the electrician must still:
Inspect it. Test it. Verify it. Correct it. Approve it.
Never allow AI to make the final safety or compliance decision.
When technical accuracy matters, the information should be checked against the applicable legislation, standards, manufacturer instructions and verified test results.
The electrician of the future
The electrician of the future will still need traditional skills.
They will still need to understand conductors, protection, earthing, bonding, testing, fault-finding, motors, control systems and safe working procedures.
But those skills will increasingly be combined with digital abilities.

It should remove unnecessary delays, duplicated paperwork and repetitive administration so that the electrician can concentrate on the work that requires human competence.
Let AI prepare the first draft of the report.
Let AI organise the site notes.
Let AI improve the customer message.
Let AI assist with the quotation.
But let the electrician make the technical decision.
Let the electrician conduct the tests.
Let the electrician verify compliance.
Let the electrician accept responsibility.
The real choice facing the industry
Every major technological change creates uncertainty.
Some people resist it. Some fear it. Some misuse it. Others learn how to work with it.
AI will not suddenly make years of electrical training, practical experience and legal registration worthless.
But it will change the standard of service customers expect.
Contractors who learn to combine genuine electrical competence with faster administration, clearer communication and better digital systems will have an advantage.
Those who refuse to become involved may find themselves competing against contractors who quote faster, communicate better, keep stronger records and complete their administration more efficiently.
The future does not belong only to artificial intelligence.
It belongs to skilled people who know how to use artificial intelligence responsibly.
The electrician’s toolbox is not disappearing.
It is simply getting one more tool.
The electrician of tomorrow will carry practical skill, technical knowledge, professional responsibility—and a digital assistant.
