The Rise of Opinions vs The Authority of Regulation

⚡ The Rise of Opinions vs The Authority of Regulation

Why Every Registered Electrician Must Stand on Law — Not Noise

After more than 30 years in the electrical industry and 17 years dedicated to training Wireman’s License candidates, we at TDMI Training have witnessed a concerning shift in our industry.

There has been a massive rise in opinions, debates, and personal vendettas — often driven by individuals with strong theoretical knowledge, but limited real-world experience.

And here lies the danger…

👉 When opinions start sounding like authority, the industry becomes unsafe.

⚖️ The Foundation of Our Industry: Not Opinion — But Law

Let’s be absolutely clear:

Our industry is not governed by WhatsApp groups, Facebook debates, or personal interpretations.

It is governed by:

  • SANS Regulations (10142-1 etc.)
  • The Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHS Act)
  • Electrical Machinery Regulations
  • Relevant Standards and Regulations
  • Department of Labour (DOL) Registration Requirements

These are not suggestions.
These are legal frameworks.

And most importantly:

👉 Only the Department of Labour (DOL) can issue or revoke a Wireman’s License.

Not an influencer.
Not a group admin.
Not a self-proclaimed expert.

⚠️ The Real Risk: Misleading Information

We are seeing more individuals:

  • Speaking with authority but without field experience
  • Promoting personal interpretations as “fact”
  • Creating confusion around compliance
  • Challenging established regulations without accountability

This creates a dangerous environment where:

❌ Installations become inconsistent
❌ Compliance is misunderstood
❌ Safety is compromised

And ultimately…

👉 The registered electrician carries the risk — not the person giving the opinion.

🧾 The Weight of the Signature: Your COC, Your Responsibility

Every Certificate of Compliance (COC) you sign is not just paperwork.

It is a legal declaration.

When you sign a COC, you are confirming that:

  • The installation complies with SANS 10142-1
  • The work was done under your general control
  • The installation is safe for use

And here’s the reality:

👉 If something goes wrong — YOU are liable.

Not the WhatsApp group.
Not the advisor.
Not the “guy who said it’s fine.”

You.

📚 Self-Responsibility: The Mark of a True Professional

In today’s environment, being qualified is not enough.

You must be:

  • Actively studying the regulations
  • Understanding the SANS codes
  • Applying the OHS Act correctly
  • Staying updated with DOL requirements

Because:

👉 Your registration is personal. Your responsibility is personal.

📱 Information vs Truth: Navigating the Noise

We are not saying:

❌ Don’t engage in discussions
❌ Don’t join WhatsApp groups
❌ Don’t learn from others

In fact — you should.

BUT…

👉 Test everything you hear against one standard:

Does this align with the regulations and the DOL requirements?

If not — it is just an opinion.

⚡ The Industry Is Evolving — Faster Than Regulation

Let’s be honest:

  • Solar systems
  • Inverters
  • Battery storage
  • Smart technologies

These are evolving faster than regulations can keep up.

And this gap creates:

⚠️ Uncertainty
⚠️ Interpretation
⚠️ Debate

Which is exactly where opinions start taking over.

🛑 The Line Must Be Drawn

As a registered electrician, you cannot afford to operate in grey areas.

You must:

✔️ Anchor yourself in regulation
✔️ Apply tested principles
✔️ Take ownership of your decisions
✔️ Prioritise safety above all

Because at the end of the day:

👉 You are the final authority on your installation.

🧠 Final Thought: Integrity Over Influence

This industry does not need more noise.

It needs:

  • Professionals with integrity
  • Electricians who understand responsibility
  • Registered persons who stand by the law

At TDMI Training, our commitment has always been clear:

👉 We train electricians to think, apply, and take responsibility — not follow opinions blindly.

🔥 Call to Action

If you are serious about your future in this industry:

  • Study your regulations
  • Know your responsibilities
  • Respect the authority of the DOL
  • Take ownership of every COC you sign

Because:

A true electrician is not led by opinions — but by standards.

Considering the above, I trust that we, as custodians of the installation industry, will remain committed to compliance, technical excellence, and safe installation practices to protect both the industry and its stakeholders.

This is great but there’s another thing that’s often misunderstood. Legal requirement to join the NBCEI and comply with the Goverment Gazetted Collective agreement.
