⚡ Wiring Wisdom Series: #1 to #3

Building a Safer Industry — One Section at a Time

At TDMI Training and Nearby Electrician, we believe that knowledge is power — especially when it comes to safety and compliance in the electrical industry. That’s why we launched the Wiring Wisdom series: a daily breakdown of the SANS 10142-1:2024 (Edition 3.2) wiring code — simplified, structured, and shared in plain language.

In this first website edition, we recap Wiring Wisdom #1 through #3 to lay the foundation for safe and compliant installations.

🔹 Wiring Wisdom #1: Scope

Every rule starts with a boundary. Section 1 of the code explains where the SANS 10142-1 applies, and just as importantly, where it does not.

This section defines:

  • The types of installations covered (from domestic dwellings to solar and industrial sites),

  • Voltages included (AC/DC, extra-low to high),

  • Exclusions such as mines, vehicles, and aircraft.

🔹 Wiring Wisdom #2: Normative References

Section 2 shows us that SANS 10142 doesn’t stand alone. It depends on a network of other SANS standards, each supporting specific technical or safety elements.

This includes references to:

  • SANS 1019 (graphical symbols),

  • SANS 60079 (explosive atmospheres),

  • And many more covering wiring, switching, surge protection, and conductor sizing.

Understanding these references is key to full compliance.

🔹 Wiring Wisdom #3: Definitions

Before you can comply, you must understand the language of the code. Section 3 lays out critical terms like:

  • Protective conductor,

  • Distribution board,

  • Fault current,

  • Prosumer’s installation.

These definitions are not just for theory — they affect how the rest of the standard is applied in practice.
