Lead in a Way That Makes People Want to Follow
👷Lead in a Way That Makes People Want to Follow
As leaders — whether in your business, your home, your team, or your community of electricians — we often fall into the trap of thinking:
“If I push harder, demand more, and apply pressure… I will get better results.”
But true leadership does not operate on fear.
It operates on trust.
A great leader does not force movement.
A great leader moves first — and others follow.
📖 1. Leadership Is Example — Not Pressure
1 Peter 5:2–3 says:
“Be shepherds of God’s flock… not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”
Notice the wording:
Not controlling. Not intimidating. Not demanding.
Being examples.
In the electrical industry — especially as registered persons or business owners — it is easy to become the “boss” instead of the leader.
But a leader:
-
Shows up on time.
-
Wears PPE correctly.
-
Follows SANS regulations even when no one is watching.
-
Speaks respectfully to clients and workers.
-
Takes responsibility when mistakes happen.
Your team will not follow what you say.
They will follow what you model.
📖 2. Authority Comes From Character
Matthew 20:26 says:
“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.”
This is opposite to the world’s thinking.
The world says:
-
Demand respect.
-
Show dominance.
-
Keep control.
But Biblical leadership says:
-
Serve.
-
Build.
-
Protect.
-
Equip.
When your apprentices see you:
-
Teaching patiently instead of shouting,
-
Correcting privately instead of embarrassing publicly,
-
Helping carry material instead of only supervising,
They will not follow you because they are scared.
They will follow you because they trust you.
And trust is stronger than fear.
📖 3. A Leader’s Tone Sets the Culture
Proverbs 29:2 says:
“When the righteous increase, the people rejoice.”
Notice — not when the loud increase.
Not when the strict increase.
When the righteous increase.
Your attitude determines:
-
The morale on site.
-
The respect in your business.
-
The reputation in your community.
In TDMI’s network of electricians, we are not only training technically competent men —
we are raising leaders of integrity.
And integrity cannot be shouted into people.
It must be lived out in front of them.
🔧 Practical Leadership Tactics for Electricians
Here are real, practical ways to lead correctly in your company or crew:
1️⃣ Lead From the Front
-
If a trench must be dug — pick up a shovel first.
-
If a DB needs to be cleaned up — show how it should look.
-
If documentation must be completed — do yours properly.
People respect leaders who are willing to do what they ask others to do.
2️⃣ Correct With Wisdom, Not Ego
Instead of:
“How many times must I tell you?!”
Try:
“Let me show you why we do it this way.”
Correction builds when it educates.
It destroys when it humiliates.
3️⃣ Protect Your Team’s Reputation
-
Double-check installations.
-
Inspect before signing a COC.
-
Ensure compliance before handover.
Your team’s confidence grows when they know their leader will not allow them to fail publicly.
4️⃣ Make Decisions Based on Principle — Not Emotion
A great leader does not react — he responds.
When a client pressures you to “just connect it quickly,”
When a contractor wants to bypass regulation,
When a worker makes a costly mistake —
Pause.
Think.
Lead.
True leadership in our industry means:
-
Choosing compliance over convenience.
-
Choosing patience over anger.
-
Choosing long-term reputation over short-term profit.
🔥 The Ultimate Leadership Model
The greatest example of leadership is found in Jesus Christ.
He did not control with fear.
He led with truth, love, and example.
And people followed Him — not because they were forced —
but because they saw integrity, courage, and authority rooted in character.
💡 Final Challenge for This Week
Ask yourself:
-
Do my people follow me because they must…
or because they trust me? -
Do I lead by position…
or by example? -
If I removed my title, would people still respect my influence?
Great leaders do not push.
They walk first.
And others follow.
TDMI Family —
Let us raise electricians who are not only technically qualified…
But leaders who think correctly, lead correctly, and build correctly.
Because when the thinking changes —
the leadership changes.
