Opportunity for Electricians Who Still Need N3
(Engineering Skills Programme Route)
Dear Candidate,
Many electricians in South Africa are currently facing the same challenge:
You have the experience, the Unit Standards, and the trade background, but the Department of Labour still requires N3 before you can register as an Installation Electrician or Master Installation Electrician.
The good news is that there may still be a pathway available.
1. Background – Why This Opportunity Exists
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has officially started phasing out the old NATED N1 – N3 programmes as South Africa moves toward new occupational qualifications and trade pathways.
However, during this transition the Department has created Engineering Skills Programmes (N1–N3) to give students and apprentices a second opportunity to complete these subjects where they are still required.
These programmes allow students to complete the necessary engineering subjects even though the original NATED programmes are being phased out.

2. Important – These Are Skills Programmes
The Engineering Skills Programmes:
• Are not full qualifications on the NQF
• Are designed only to provide access to further training or trades
• Students receive Statements of Results for the subjects completed
This means the subjects are still officially examined nationally, and the results can still be used where required.
TC 0122 - N1-N3 SKILLS PROGRAMS
3. The N1 – N3 Engineering Skills Programmes
The programme includes the following subjects:
N1 Engineering Skills Programme
Subjects:
• Engineering Drawing N1
• Engineering Science N1
• Mathematics N1
N2 Engineering Skills Programme
Subjects:
• Mathematics N2
• Engineering Drawing N2
• Engineering Science N2
• PLUS one trade subject such as:
• Electrical Trade Theory N2
• Industrial Electronics N2
• Logic Systems N2
• Motor Electrical Theory N2
N3 Engineering Skills Programme
Subjects:
• Engineering Drawing N3
• Engineering Science N3
• Mathematics N3
4. Why This Matters for Electricians
For electricians who want to register with the Department of Labour, the N3 requirement is often the last missing piece.
Many electricians currently have:
✔ Trade Test
✔ Unit Standards
✔ Practical experience
But they are still blocked because of the N3 requirement.
This Engineering Skills Programme may provide an opportunity to complete those missing subjects.
5. Who Can Enroll
According to the DHET circular, these programmes are available for:
Students who have:
• Completed Matric (NSC) or equivalent
• Want to pursue engineering or artisan training
• Need the subjects for further progression
or
Apprentices and employees
• Who are placed in companies
• Who need the subjects for artisan development
6. Important Notes
Candidates must understand the following:
• These programmes are not funded by NSFAS
• Colleges can set their own admission criteria
• The results are issued as Statements of Results
• Subjects are still examined nationally
7. What TDMI Is Currently Investigating
TDMI Training is currently engaging with the relevant authorities to determine:
✔ Whether electricians who still need N3 can complete it through this programme
✔ Whether it will be accepted by the Department of Labour for Wireman's Licence registration
✔ Which colleges will be offering these subjects moving forward
Our goal is to assist electricians who are stuck because of N3 to find a legal and recognised pathway forward.
8. What Students Should Do Now
If you are currently:
• A Single Phase Tester wanting to upgrade to Installation Electrician
• An electrician who still needs N3 for registration
• Someone who previously attempted but did not complete N3
Then please contact TDMI so that we can:
• Record your details
• Monitor the programme availability
• Assist you with the correct pathway when confirmed
9. TDMI’s Commitment
At TDMI Training our mission is simple:
Empowering Electricians, Illuminating Futures
We will continue working with industry stakeholders and authorities to ensure that electricians have clear and fair pathways to become registered professionals.
If you would like assistance or want to register interest in completing N3 through this pathway, please contact us.
